We use food, porn, sex, relationships, buying, and binging with our phones as mood-modifiers, as sedatives for deep pain we may not be aware of.

We fill with it an internal gap that took root in us early, and we bandage a trauma that caused a rift in language that we could only heal by distracting from it with compulsive behavior.

Addiction was our dumb cry, our muffled pain, and our affectionate groaning.
